Knee Pain When You Sit? Here Is What It Usually Means
A knee that aches after a long car ride, a film, or a day at a desk has a name among physiotherapists: the “movie-goer’s knee.” The medical term is patellofemoral pain, and it is one of the most common knee complaints we see.
Why sitting makes it worse
When your knee is bent for a long time, two things happen:
- The kneecap (patella) is pressed back against the thigh bone, loading the cartilage underneath it.
- The muscles around the knee and hip stay in a shortened, switched-off position.
Stand up and the first few steps feel stiff and sore until things get moving again.
The usual causes
- Weak or poorly-timed hip and thigh muscles. If the glutes and quadriceps are not controlling the knee well, the kneecap tracks slightly off-centre and irritates the tissue underneath.
- Sudden change in activity. A jump in walking, running, or stair climbing before the knee is ready.
- Tight structures around the knee and the outside of the thigh.
- Footwear and posture that change how load passes through the leg.
It is rarely “wear and tear” or arthritis in younger and middle-aged people, even though it can feel alarming.
What helps
- Move often. Straighten the knee fully and take a short walk every 30 to 40 minutes of sitting.
- Strengthen the hips and thighs. Exercises like sit-to-stands, step-ups and side-lying leg raises, done properly and progressed over weeks, are the core of recovery.
- Adjust load, do not stop completely. Reduce the aggravating activity to a level the knee tolerates, then build back up gradually.
- Check your setup. A chair that keeps the knees far below the hips, or a car seat too close to the pedals, keeps the knee over-bent.
When to get it assessed
See a physiotherapist if the pain:
- Has lasted more than 2 to 3 weeks
- Includes swelling, locking, or the knee giving way
- Started after a specific twist or impact
- Stops you doing normal daily activities
A proper assessment finds which muscles are underperforming and gives you a plan that actually targets the cause. If you are near PWD Road, Media Town, National Police Foundation or Bahria Town, book an appointment with Alpha Physiotherapy and we will take a look.
