Condition We Treat

Neck Pain

Neck pain, stiffness and tension are some of the most common complaints we treat, and for most people, they’re closely tied to posture, screen time, and stress held in the shoulders and upper neck rather than anything structurally serious.

Common causes

  • “Tech neck” - hours spent looking down at a phone or laptop
  • Poor desk and workstation setup, particularly screen height and chair support
  • Muscle tension from stress, carried heavily in the neck and upper shoulders
  • Sleeping position and unsupportive pillows
  • Whiplash-type injuries from an accident or sudden jolt
  • Joint stiffness in the cervical spine restricting normal movement

Why neck pain often comes with headaches

The neck and head share nerve pathways, so tension and joint restriction in the upper neck frequently cause headaches that start at the base of the skull and spread forward, known as cervicogenic headaches. Treating the neck often resolves headaches that painkillers alone never fully touch.

What we assess

We check your neck’s range of motion, which muscles are tight versus which are weak, and how your posture and daily habits (screen use, sleep position, stress) may be feeding the tension. This tells us whether the main driver is muscular, joint stiffness, posture, or a combination.

Treatment approach

Manual therapy eases joint stiffness and muscle tension directly. Dry needling is often effective for the deep, knotted tension many people carry in the upper trapezius and neck muscles. Chiropractic adjustment can restore movement to restricted neck joints. From there, targeted exercise for neck and shoulder strength, along with practical posture adjustments, is what prevents the tension from simply building back up.

Practical changes that help

  • Raising your screen to eye level to reduce prolonged downward tilt
  • Taking regular breaks from phone use, particularly scrolling with the head bent forward
  • A supportive pillow suited to your sleeping position

When to get it assessed

  • Neck pain lasting more than two weeks
  • Pain radiating into the shoulder or arm
  • Numbness or tingling in the hand or fingers
  • Headaches that seem to start from the neck
  • Neck pain following any kind of impact or accident

Preventing it from coming back

Once the immediate pain has settled, the work that keeps it from returning is usually about daily habits rather than more treatment: screen height, regular breaks from prolonged positions, and maintaining the strength built during your exercise programme. We’ll walk you through exactly what applies to your situation before you finish your course of treatment, so you leave with a plan, not just short-term relief.

When neck pain needs urgent attention

Rarely, neck pain can signal something more serious, severe pain following major trauma, or neck pain with fever, unexplained weight loss, or significant weakness. These are not typical presentations and would be flagged to you clearly during assessment, with a referral for urgent medical review rather than physiotherapy alone.
