Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy is the foundation of everything we do at Alpha Physiotherapy. It’s the assessment-led, hands-on treatment of pain, stiffness, weakness and mobility loss, whether that’s from an old injury, a new one, surgery, or simply months of poor posture catching up with you.
What physiotherapy actually involves
A physiotherapy session isn’t a fixed routine applied to everyone the same way. It starts with an assessment: how you move, where you’re compensating, what’s tight, what’s weak, and where the problem likely started (which is often not where the pain shows up). From there, treatment usually combines a few things:
- Manual therapy — joint mobilisation and soft tissue work to ease stiffness and pain
- Targeted exercise — building strength and control in the muscles that aren’t doing their job
- Education — a clear explanation of what’s going on and what you can do about it day to day
Who physiotherapy is for
You don’t need a referral or a dramatic injury to see a physiotherapist. People come to us for a sore back that’s lingered for weeks, a shoulder that clicks when they reach overhead, a knee that aches after a run, or simply because a doctor recommended it after surgery. Physiotherapy is equally useful for a one-off strain and for a long-standing, nagging problem you’ve learned to live around.
What to expect at your first visit
Your first appointment runs 45 to 60 minutes. We take a full history, examine the affected area (and often the areas above and below it, since problems are frequently referred from elsewhere), and explain what we think is driving the pain in plain language. You’ll usually leave with some hands-on treatment already done and two or three exercises to start immediately, not just an appointment card for next week.
Follow-up sessions are shorter, generally 30 to 45 minutes, and build on what’s working. Progress is checked regularly against a clear timeline, so you know whether things are moving in the right direction rather than guessing.
Why an assessment-first approach matters
The same complaint can have completely different causes in different people. Shoulder pain in someone who sits at a desk all day is rarely the same problem as shoulder pain after a sports injury, even if the symptoms look identical on the surface. Skipping straight to a generic treatment or a generic exercise sheet found online often treats the symptom without touching the actual cause, which is why the pain keeps coming back.
How many sessions will I need?
There’s no single answer, it depends on how long the problem has been building, how it’s responding, and whether the underlying cause is straightforward or layered. A recent muscle strain might settle in a handful of visits; a longstanding postural problem that’s taken years to develop usually needs a longer, staged plan. What we can promise is a clear review at each stage, so you know whether things are improving on schedule, not a vague “come back next week” with no checkpoint.
What sets our approach apart
We don’t run a high-volume clinic where you’re seen for ten minutes and handed off to a machine. Every session is one-on-one with your physiotherapist, hands-on, and adjusted based on how you’re actually responding that week, not a fixed protocol applied regardless of progress.
