Electrotherapy (TENS, Laser & Ultrasound)
Not every part of recovery can be reached by hands and exercise alone. Electrotherapy, TENS, therapeutic laser and ultrasound, gives us additional tools to manage pain and support tissue healing, used alongside hands-on treatment rather than instead of it.
TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation)
Small electrical pulses are delivered through pads placed on the skin near the painful area. TENS works by interrupting pain signals travelling to the brain and encouraging the body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals, which makes it especially useful for managing acute pain, including post-surgical discomfort, so that exercise and movement stay possible even in the early, more painful stages of recovery.
Therapeutic laser
Low-level laser therapy delivers light energy into the tissue to reduce inflammation and support cellular repair. It’s commonly used for tendon injuries, soft tissue damage and areas that are slow to heal, applied directly over the affected area for a short, painless session as part of a treatment visit.
Ultrasound therapy
Ultrasound uses sound waves to generate gentle heat deep within soft tissue, improving local blood flow and helping to loosen tight muscle and connective tissue. It’s often used for deeper muscle tension or tissue that’s difficult to reach effectively with manual pressure alone.
When electrotherapy is used
- Managing pain in the early stages after surgery or injury
- Reducing inflammation in tendons and soft tissue
- Supporting healing in slow-recovering injuries
- Easing muscle tension before manual therapy or exercise, so movement is more comfortable and effective
Why it’s a support tool, not the main treatment
Electrotherapy helps create the right conditions for recovery, less pain, less inflammation, better blood flow, but it doesn’t rebuild strength or correct movement patterns on its own. We use it to make hands-on treatment and exercise more effective and more comfortable, particularly in the early or more painful stages of a condition, not as a stand-alone fix.
Is it safe?
TENS, laser and ultrasound are all well-established, non-invasive techniques with a long history of use in physiotherapy. Your physiotherapist will check for any reason a particular modality isn’t suitable for you (certain medical conditions or pregnancy, for example) before including it in your plan.
What it doesn’t replace
It’s worth being upfront: electrotherapy alone rarely resolves a musculoskeletal problem on its own, and any clinic offering it as a stand-alone repeat treatment without hands-on care or exercise isn’t giving you the full picture. We use it as one part of a broader plan, never as the entire treatment, since lasting improvement comes from addressing the strength and movement issues behind the pain, not just calming the pain signal.
What a session feels like
None of these modalities are painful. TENS delivers a mild tingling sensation, laser therapy is entirely painless, and ultrasound feels like a gentle, warm pressure from the treatment head moving over the skin. Sessions are typically short, a few minutes each, and are usually combined with manual therapy in the same visit.
Getting started
If you’re dealing with pain that’s making movement or exercise difficult, particularly after surgery or a recent injury, electrotherapy may be a useful part of your treatment. Alpha Physiotherapy is on PWD Road, Media Town, Rawalpindi, book an assessment and we’ll build it into a plan alongside hands-on treatment and exercise.
