Exercise Protocols

Hands-on treatment eases pain and restores movement in the short term, but rebuilding lasting strength and preventing the problem from coming back is largely down to exercise, done correctly, progressed properly, and specific to what’s actually weak or compensating.

Why a generic exercise sheet usually doesn’t work

Printed exercise sheets found online or handed out without a proper assessment tend to treat the general area of pain rather than the specific muscle or movement pattern that’s actually underperforming. Two people with “knee pain” can need completely different exercises depending on whether the issue is weak hip control, poor quad activation, or something else entirely. Exercise that doesn’t target the real cause rarely produces lasting change.

How we build your programme

We start from the assessment: what’s weak, what’s tight, what’s compensating, and what movement pattern needs correcting. From there we build a progressive plan, starting at a level your body can actually manage right now, then increasing difficulty in a controlled way as strength and control improve. Progressing too fast causes flare-ups; progressing too slowly wastes time and motivation. Getting that pace right is a large part of what we manage for you.

What a typical programme includes

  • Mobility work to restore range of motion where it’s restricted
  • Targeted strengthening for the specific muscles found to be underperforming
  • Control and stability exercises, particularly for the hips, core and shoulder, common sources of compensation
  • Functional movement retraining, so improvements carry over into daily activities, work or sport, not just the exercises themselves

Designed to fit real life

An exercise plan only works if you can actually do it. We build programmes around realistic time, equipment (most need little to none) and your daily routine, whether that’s a few minutes a day at home, exercises worked into your existing gym routine, or a plan for returning to a specific sport.

Ongoing adjustment

Your programme isn’t fixed. As strength and movement improve, exercises get progressed; if something flares up or isn’t working, we adjust it. This is checked at follow-up visits so the plan keeps moving you forward rather than staying static once it’s handed to you.

Doing it at home vs coming into the clinic

Most programmes involve some independent home practice, but that doesn’t mean you’re left on your own. Follow-up visits check your form and technique in person (a subtly wrong movement pattern can quietly undo the benefit of an exercise, or aggravate the very thing you’re trying to fix), and the programme is adjusted based on how you report it’s going, not just left running unchanged for months.

Minimal equipment needed

Most exercise protocols we build rely on bodyweight and, at most, a resistance band, so you’re never dependent on gym access to keep up with your programme. Where equipment genuinely helps, we’ll tell you exactly what’s needed and why, rather than assuming you already have it.

Getting started

Whether you’re recovering from an injury, coming back from surgery, or dealing with a longstanding weakness that keeps causing problems, a proper exercise protocol built around your specific assessment findings is usually the difference between short-term relief and a lasting fix.
