3 Simple Shoulder Stretches To Ease Daily Stiffness

Person doing a cross-body shoulder stretch outdoors

If your shoulders feel tight and heavy by the end of the day, you are not alone. Hours at a desk, driving, and looking down at a phone all pull the shoulders forward and let the muscles at the back switch off. A few minutes of targeted stretching can make a real difference.

Here are three stretches our physiotherapists give patients for everyday shoulder stiffness. Do them slowly, breathe normally, and stop if you feel sharp pain (a gentle pull is fine).

1. Cross-body shoulder stretch

This one targets the back of the shoulder, which gets tight from reaching and typing.

  • Bring one arm straight across your chest at about shoulder height.
  • Use your other hand to gently draw the arm closer to your body.
  • Keep the shoulder down, away from your ear.
  • Hold for 30 seconds, then swap sides. Repeat twice each side.

2. Doorway chest opener

Tight chest muscles pull the shoulders forward. Opening the front helps the shoulder sit in a better position.

  • Stand in a doorway and place your forearms on the frame, elbows at about shoulder height.
  • Step one foot through the doorway until you feel a stretch across the front of your chest and shoulders.
  • Hold for 30 seconds. Do it 2 to 3 times.

Keep your ribs down and avoid arching your lower back.

3. Behind-the-back towel stretch

This restores the reaching-behind movement that stiff shoulders lose first.

  • Hold a small towel behind your back, one hand over your shoulder and the other at your lower back.
  • Gently pull upward with the top hand until you feel a stretch in the bottom shoulder.
  • Hold 20 to 30 seconds, then switch which hand is on top.

How often should you do these?

Once or twice a day is plenty for general stiffness. They work best as a short, regular habit rather than one long session.

When to see a physiotherapist

Book an assessment if you have:

  • Shoulder pain that has lasted more than two weeks
  • Pain that wakes you at night or when you lie on that side
  • Weakness, catching, or a feeling that the shoulder might “give way”
  • Stiffness that is getting worse rather than better

At Alpha Physiotherapy on PWD Road (easily reached from Media Town, National Police Foundation and Bahria Town), we assess what is actually driving the stiffness and build a plan around it - hands-on treatment plus a short home programme that fits your day.
