Pelvic Pain Physiotherapy
Pelvic pain is common, genuinely treatable, and nothing to feel embarrassed discussing. Whether it’s related to pregnancy, the pelvic floor, or ongoing pain with no obvious cause found elsewhere, a specialised assessment usually identifies something concrete that can actually be treated.
Who experiences pelvic pain
- Pregnant women, particularly pelvic girdle pain that worsens with certain movements
- Postnatal women recovering from vaginal birth or C-section
- Anyone with pelvic floor dysfunction - overly tight or overly weak pelvic floor muscles
- Men and women with chronic pelvic pain unrelated to pregnancy or childbirth
- People experiencing pain during specific activities, sitting, exercise, or intimacy
Common causes
Pelvic pain can come from joint dysfunction in the pelvis (particularly during and after pregnancy), pelvic floor muscles that are either too tight or too weak to function properly, referred pain from the lower back or hip, or scar tissue following childbirth or pelvic surgery. It’s rarely one simple cause, which is why a thorough assessment matters.
What a pelvic health assessment involves
The assessment is private, unhurried, and led entirely at your pace. We discuss your symptoms and history in detail first, then assess pelvic and lower back movement, and, where appropriate and with your full consent, pelvic floor muscle function, since this is often central to understanding what’s driving the pain. Nothing happens without a clear explanation first and your comfort throughout.
Treatment approach
Treatment depends entirely on what’s found. For pelvic girdle pain in pregnancy, gentle manual therapy and supportive exercise are typically the focus. For pelvic floor dysfunction, that might mean retraining an overly tight pelvic floor to relax and release, or building strength in one that’s weak, these need opposite approaches, which is exactly why an accurate assessment comes first. For pain following childbirth or surgery, gentle scar tissue treatment and graded core rehabilitation are usually central.
Why this shouldn’t be dismissed as normal
Pelvic pain, whether during pregnancy, postnatally, or unrelated to either, is often brushed off as something to just live with. It usually isn’t. Most pelvic pain has an identifiable, treatable cause, and physiotherapy focused specifically on this area makes a genuine, measurable difference for most people who commit to a course of treatment.
You don’t need a referral to start
You don’t need a doctor’s referral to book a pelvic health assessment, though we’re happy to coordinate with your gynaecologist or GP where that’s useful, particularly if there’s a specific diagnosis already in place. Many people simply book directly once they’ve decided the pain is worth addressing properly.
It affects men too
While pelvic pain is more commonly discussed in relation to women’s health, men can experience it as well, often linked to pelvic floor tension, previous surgery, or referred pain from the lower back or hip. The same careful, private assessment approach applies regardless of who’s booking it.
